"The way I see this book, it caters to two types of gamers: those who have read the Black Company novels and wish to play in that setting, and those who may or may not have read the novels but wish to play in a gritty, brutal, dark world of sorcery and survival. "Whether you have read the novels or not, The Black Company brings enough flavor and information on board to make even the most unknowing of DMs knowledgeable enough to run a decently flavored campaign. At the very least, there is enough meat to inspire one to go get the books and read them. There is a lot of great back-story not found in the novels on both the world and the characters and the alterations of the combat and magic systems fit the storyline well. This was one of the gems of the end of the year."

"While the book seems ostensibly written for those who are familiar with the series and want to play it, newbies simply looking for a good warfare based world with good mass combat rules should have a lot of fun as well. Anyone who is really into magic, and doesn't mind a little number crunching, might wish to stop by just to look at the magic system."
