Using Hobby Games: The 100 Best to Sell Games

Green Ronin recently released Hobby Games: The 100 Best, a collection of essays about the great games of the last 50 years by a veritable who's who of game designers and industry notables. It's a great piece of industry history but more than that it's a great sales tool for retailers. Here are some ideas on how you can use Hobby Games: The 100 Best to sell more games in your store.

Counter Copy
This is a handy book to keep on your front counter. Let customers flip through it as they are making purchases. Use it to help people find gifts for friends and family. Show them what a famous game designer had to say about the game they are purchasing. Your staff (and particularly new hires) can also benefit from the book, as it's an easy way to help them understand your stock.

Special Display
You can draw attention to both the book and the covered games by setting up a special display. This will get your customers talking. Find out how many games on the list they already own and sell them the ones they don't have.

Alpha Gamers
Every store has its alpha gamers and aspiring designers. They need this book. Some of the best minds in the industry give great advice and analysis of what makes games great. If you can get the alpha gamers to buy in, others will follow. Anyone that reads the book will be back to buy some of the featured games.

Special Events
The book provides a great theme for a game day or weekend. Showcase nothing but games covered in the book. Let people try games that made the list and find out why they did. And of course be ready to sell them the games they played during the event.

Used Games
If you carry used games, the book is a handy way to draw attention to older classics. Some of the covered games are long out of print, but can frequently be found in the second hand market. Get the most out of vintage games by promoting their inclusion in Hobby Games: The 100 Best.

Green Ronin's August Releases

August is a busy month for Green Ronin Publishing. Green Ronin’s legendary Freeport setting gets a major updating with the Pirate’s Guide to Freeport, and there will be immedidiate support in the form of the True 20 Freeport Companion and the Dark Wings Over Freeport adventure. Fans of the Mutants and Masterminds RPG will have a new setting sourcebook on which to hang their adventures and True20 game masters will rejoice at the True20 Narrator's Kit.

Freeport is Green Ronin's signature city setting and has been home to thousands of RPG campaigns since its launch in 2000. Classic fantasy elements, cruel-hearted pirates, and Lovecraftian horror come together in the rum-fueled metropolis known as the City of Adventure. The Pirate’s Guide to Freeport is the definitive new sourcebook for the City of Adventure, set 5 years after the events of the original Freeport Trilogy. This is a pure setting book, focusing entirely on the people, places, politics, and perils of Freeport and containing no game statistics of any kind. The Pirate’s Guide to Freeport can thus be used with any fantasy RPG and Green Ronin will be providing companion products for popular systems like True20 and d20. This massive, 256-page hardcover has a suggested retail price of $34.95.

The True20 Freeport Companion gives players and narrators everything they need to enjoy exciting campaigns in the City of Adventure with the True20 rules. The book includes new heroic paths and feats, True20 stats for all the major NPCs, and a new Freeport adventure. True 20 Freeport Companion is a 128-page softcover book with a suggested retail price of $23.95.

To make it even easier for Freeport GMs, a special Bleeding Edge adventure also debuts along with the Pirate's Guide: Dark Wings Over Freeport. This module features both d20 and True20 stats, so fans of both games can get to gaming in Freeport right way. This 36-page adventure retails for $11.95.

Game masters of True20 Adventure Roelplaying will also be delighted by the True20 Narrator's Kit. This features an incredibly sturdy three panel screen with the thickness and toughness of a hardback book. It's paired with an introductory adventure, Last Voyage of the Stellar Galleon, by Star Wars RPG author Rodney Thompson. The True20 Narrator's Kit retails for $19.95.

Being a teenager is hard enough: school, work, parents, friends, dating, and more without complicating matters by adding super-powers and a secret identity to the mix. Hero High is a genre book for the Mutants & Masterminds RPG that explores the world of teen heroes (and villains!) In it, you’ll find all you need to run a teen heroes campaign of your own, with all the trials and tribulations that entails. Hero High also includes expanded material for the Claremont Academy in the Freedom City campaign setting: visit the private school where a new generation of heroes trains. Hero High is a 128-page, softcover volume with a suggested retail of $26.95.
