Sounds cool.

Id say that an easier way than trying to rationalize super power inducing accidents in the wild west (harder than in modern day) would to use a generic power source, like the WildCard virus, or the first generation of mutants, or a meoteor dispensing superpowers, ect.
Aliens in the wild west could be quite amusing.
An idea I was fooling around with had folks in the wild west with psychic powers (usually one power that they could do many different things with) without really understanding them. They were either gonna be born with em, or triggered by high stress and danger, ala Talents (from Godlike). There was also gonna be Jules Vernian style technology around as another source.
And mystic powers would be around as well, albeit quite rare.

I can recall hearing about a movie script for an alien invasion in the old west called Ghost Riders in the Sky, maybe something like that could spur some parahuman generation.

That sound like a fun concept. As far as the origins of powers, you might take a page out of Deadlands (interesting world, bad system) and have the powers tied to spiritual energies. Maybe some event weakened the barrier between the material world and the spirit world and the spiritual energy has odd effects on people who are touched by it. Just a thought.

required reading for a game of this sort is the Elseworlds JUSTICE RIDERS. Steampunk villains versus a Western Justice League...

Heh..I was thinking more about today, and if you used a Talent (from Godlike) or Nova (from Abberant) approach to power sources for the powered heroes, you could call them *dadadaaaa~!* Mavericks.
So you could have Mavericks, Vernian Gadgeteers and Battlesuits, and Mystical types.

Thats a cool approach too, and I liked Deadlands, a lot. A few mortal men and women come into possession of relics, contact with spirits, or have traumatic events in places were the spiritual barriers are thin/weirdness is strong.
