True20 Bestiary

Postby papaholdy » Wed Feb 15, 2006 11:58 am

I saw a listing on and RPG online store and they were taking preorders for True20 Bestiary. Will this be a release? Why no mention on the Green Ronin website. I think it is an important book that will go a long way to securing True20's future and I look forward to it.

I am expecting the True 20 release announcement to be relatively big. Hopefully it will have its own webpage and that will include what products to expect as well as links through to the various setting winners.

It may not happen but here is hoping.

As for the Bestiary, I am pretty sure that it is a scheduled product.
Playing: Shades of Terra (Exalted: Dragonblooded); Lure of the Expanse (Rogue Trader)
Running: Horror on the Orient Express (Call of Cthulhu); Against the Cult of the Reptile God + Sentinel & Gauntlet (Dungeon World)

There are a lot of people waiting patiently (or not so patiently) to find out any tid-bits :)

heh, if I can wait 9 months to have a baby, I can wait for news on an RPG book. :P

The True20 press release on the main GR page has a paragraph about this book. The author is Matthew E. Kaiser, who was one of the people here clamoring most loudly for more detail on monster-building--and the one who put his keystrokes where his mouth is. Nice way to land a gig, Dragonspawn! I expect a lot from this book, just so you know...

Dragonspawn, thanks for the great (and tedious) work! :) Also thanks Daniel for putting him in touch with Chris! I've been using the bestiary guidelines in my own Al-Qadim based game and it's very helpful.

Thanks guys!

The bestiary started as a labor of love. Monsters and other beasts have always been one of my favorite aspects of any RPG. When I got the original True20 PDF I was blown away by this amazing new system, but the adversaries section was one spot I saw that needed a tad more work to suit my needs. So I started tinkering until I had a basic framework laid out for designing and creating my own creatures. From there I set about testing the system out with both my original creations and conversions of my favorite creatures in the SRD. I continued to test, edit and tweak the document until I was satisfied.

I definitely owe a big thanks to "HalWhitewyrm" a.k.a. Daniel Perez for encouraging me to publish my work and also for putting me in contact with the fine folks at Green Ronin.

I owe thanks to Chris and Steve for giving me a chance to make my mark on the True20 system, and for trusting me with some important development decisions and a large degree of creative license.

I also want to acknowledge Erica Balsley a.k.a "DnDchick" (whom you may recognize from her work on the Tome of Horrors books) for all the amazing work she has done so far, and continues to do as the book's editor.

For those of you who are chomping at the bit for some bestiary goodness, take a look at the newly expanded Adversaries section in the core book to see some examples of my handiwork. *insert evil grin*

Happy Gaming!
-Matthew E. Kaiser

Definite congratulations.

I thought your name looked familiar. :) I'm itching to see what I can integrate into my own works.

Regards,

The Bestiary will be a fantastic resourse. I am continually amazed at all the hard work that went into making this book, and in such a short period of time.

Matt aka Dragonspawn is really dedicated and thorough, and I was flattered and honored to be asked on board.

Congratulations to everyone involved with this, especially Matt and Erica (and of course a nod to Daniel for helping Matt).

It seems that in my brief hiatus from True20 (not personal choice), I missed some fun happenings. I am very much looking forward to this product. (With the upcoming True20 Adventure Roleplaying, True20 Bestiary and True20 Sorcery - I am salivating... :D )

Thanks, but as I said over at the Necromancer games boards, all credit and glory goes to Matt. This one is his baby.

Maybe I should chance my nickname here from DnDChick to True20Chick, since I am a solid convert to this system! :D

Super congrats to Matthew (Dragonspawn) for this gig. I'm incredibly happy that it all turned out good and that this book will indeed see the light of day.

I originally approached Matt about publishing the Bestiary in case Highmoon Media Productions got a winning submission in the True20 Setting Contest. It turned out, though, that the writer who was doing our setting had to withdraw so we ended up with no chance at a license. Rather than let this project die, I put Matt in touch with Chris and let them talk it all out. The result: the True20 Bestiary. :)
