Freeport goes Everquest??????

Postby drawmack » Mon Apr 14, 2003 4:50 am

I was going for my morning jaunt at http://www.gamingreport.com when I came across something that make me go hmmmm

So I decided to research it a bit more and take a look at the map of the city which looked very familiar to me. So then I went to read the history of freeport and it was all wrong.

So then I followed another link to an excerpt from the book and it also was wrong.

So I do not know what is going on. Is Freeport being ported to Everquest RPG or not? If it is how much of ''Freeport as we know it'' is going and how much is being redone?

BTW: This message if crossposted on enworld.

The Freeport that exists in Everquest is from the computer game itself and unrelated to our Freeport setting. I'm pretty sure it's pre-existing material they're using.

"Freeport" is a pretty generic name, so it's not surprising to see it used in a context unrelated to GR's city. After all, with so many worlds, there are many, many "free ports".

And from the posted intro, the EQ city is a rather distinct creature from GR's ex-pirate town. Even the maps aren't that similar, beyond the historically common "port town sprawling around central keep" model.

A couple guys who played in my Freeport campaign also play EQ online regularly. I'm in another game with them where I'm the only player who doesn't game online. My game's been mentioned around that group, but after we clarified that it was a different Freeport, they had no problem with the name being the same. Simple: If anyone mentions Tim and Freeport in the same breath, they're not talking about EQ. :yar:

EQ Freeport not new

Postby Nhoj » Thu Apr 17, 2003 6:01 pm

The EQ Freeport was there when EQ launched. I don't know when Chris started design, so I can't say which was first.

If you've never played EQ, their Freeport is human city with corruption in the guards (some are good paladins, others corrupt evil doers).

A nice touch was that they had an underground that was all evil, and evil types could sneak in without getting whacked by the NPC guards. I had a rather fetching female troll Shadow Knight (Fighter/Necro hybrid) who would be killed by guards on the surface, but did quests for the evil human NPCs in the underground.

Still, not a serpent man in sight, no Sea Lord, Capt. Scarbelly, and so on. I think Chris's is better by a long shot.

I'm pretty sure Freeport... in the Bahama's... predates both of them. :)
