Miniatures and stuff?

Postby Theon » Thu Oct 03, 2002 4:04 pm

Here's something to really spook the guys at GRP:

Now that everyone's whet their appetites on the good stuff coming out in the MnM Rulebook, everyone's building their wish-lists about stuff they want to see. Bestiaries and Genre Books aside, here's my one wish:

MINIATURES!

You can't find solid superhero minis. My crew's debased themselves by selling their souls to Wizkids, Inc, just so that we can slap paint all over their cheap ol' plastic HeroClix figs and call them our own. (Since the game stinks, we might as well use the figurines for something).

Allthough this behavior does have its own benefits - a little black paint and some blue lightning streaks and I've transformed Daredevil into DoomVolt!
Bwahhhaahhhaahha!

Which leads to an interesting side trek - one of the great things about Superhero gaming is the creative licensing one takes in designing their Superhero name. It's like a little Freudian window into the player's soul...
At my table, we've got a habitually single forty-two year old computer salesperson playing a martial-artist biker vigilante called Burnt Rubber. No joke.

Miniatures and stuff?

Lead heroes: Lance and Laser

Figures based on V&V characters. Nice stuff.

The Laser models are OK, but many are made from molds that were produced back when the V&V game was available in stores. They are also very small and look like teenage heroes compared to the standard scales of today. I found another manufacturer that makes a great variety of generic superhero miniatures, including oversized bricks, ninja goons, etc.

Some of the sculpting is akward, but there are many that are top notch. Check it out.

Thanks, guys, I'll take a look. I had also heard a rumor that Gaurdians of Order was going to license out their Silver Age Sentinels stuff for a miniatures line, but I have yet to see that confirmed anywhere, so it's probably butkiss.

I've been looking in on the Guardians of Order Forum Submitters have said how they would like HeroClix for SAS. Not going to happen says GoO. and No one there has been talking about metal minis for SAS or BESM that I've seen.

Chris's penchant for miniatures is well known (no surprise, as the former Creative Director for WotC miniatures) and he's definitely been considering our miniatures options. >:)

That's always refreshing to hear. One of the aspects of RPGing that I love are mini's.

But if none are made, you have the above options, AND, you also could try... please don't smack me too hard; Hero clix and the DC one as well Hypertime.

Mask off the base, prime the mini and do a custom job.

For the price you pay, you get some good figures.

But I tend to agree the superfigs mini's are nice. I picked up waaaaaay too many of them when I first start playing the game. I saw it as an option to play a wargame and to use them for my table top rpg's.

I'm a big fan of the now defunct Saga System. My friends and I love the Marvel Super Adventure RPG that uses the Saga engine. Problem: Miniatures don't work very well with these rules... Solution: 3rd Edition OGL... Mutants and Masterminds.

I am here reading this board and exploring this game specifically because of miniatures and because of WizKids.

Even if you don't like the game (I do... but there are other boards for these discussions)... 4 pre-painted miniatures for $6 with two sets out and an expansion on the way means that there are more super hero miniatures available right now than have ever existed in the history of gaming!

So here I am with 100's of miniatures and I'm looking for a way to make the most of them... I enjoy the Clix game, but I need more! And that is what brought me to MNM!

HeroClix is an enjoyable game, only that, at least for me, the level of enjoyment doesn't last for very long. To me, its no different than playing Monopoly. Every once and a while it's fun, and I can get into it. Problem is, to shell out enough cash to play at a competitive level is hard to swallow.

For miniatures, however, you can't beat the price. Some of the figs are a bit flimsy, though, and I've lost more than my fair share of limbs off my HeroClix figs. There's also a bit of a melting problem when using ZapAGap to reglue the little buggers. Its not a huge issue, but I've had to scrape some melted plastic off of sites where the glue seeped out. A friend of mine got around that by using Superglue, but that seems to be a weaker bonding agent. They also hold paint fairly well after a primer coat is applied.

This is a timely discussion, as Wizards just announced their closing of several of their own miniatures lines. I guess minis are not all that profitable, and maybe its an unrealistic assumption that Green Ronin will license out the rights to produce a line of their own figures. But, one can dream.

WotC mismanaged their miniatures line from start to finish. It could have been wildlly profitable, but for the corporate backstabbing, the fights over "territory" and the decision to put anyone *but* someone who knew anything about miniatures in charge of the miniatures business.

It's a crying shame, but hardly a surprise, that they couldn't make their miniatures business work.

If you guys do contract out, let me recommend Reaper minis. They have a wide variety of figs. My number one choice for a fantasy fig. I'd love to see what they would do with a superhero fig line...

Reaper has a fine selection of fantasy figs. And, their prices are just low enough to undersell most competitors. At my hobby hole, I usually check the Reaper wall first.

A number of other d20 games are also releasing miniatures, so at least all of Wizard's fumbling didn't screw that up. Privateer Press (of Iron Kingdoms fame), is producing a line for November called Warmachine, featuring fantasy-steamtech figures, and my hobby store recently shelved a miniatures line based on Arthurian legendry. I-Kore, a miniatures-first-game systems-second company has also been putting out some pretty solid products in their Celtos and Void lines.

If you are willing to rummage through bargain-bins, a number of old lines have some nice deals. Warzone's old army packs make for great super-agent strike teams (I preferr Imperials for a NATO-styled anti-superhero peacekeeper force, and at my store, I picked up 24 figs for just $12.). Warzone also has some interesting cybernetic troop types. I've also used old Chronopia figs (again, at reduced cost), to produce a force of modern-day Knights Templar from their Devout models, and I've used Styggians as a mutational invasion force.
