When playing the House game

Ok, I forget what the variant is called, the one where each player controls a house with a number of PCs.

How do you feel about replacement characters, where something happens to kill a PC.

should they come in as starting players each time, or with a similar amount of xp gained and chance to spend destiny points as the pc they replace?

I figure that if they come in as starting pcs, the difference will start to be pronounced very quickly.

My GM argues that if I want my new PC's to have more xp, I just start them older.

Firstly, I hate starting them older, secondly, it's not the XP I'm worried about so much as the time spent building an array of qualities.

Any thoughts?

Yeah, don't argue with the GM! :)

Honestly though it depends. My personal preference is for the XP to be for the story instead of each character or player. IG rewards being loot and reputation, etc instead of more XP than the guy that is a fresh PC. Other GM's not so much.

However, if you get 20xp and die the GM asks you to start over without anything extra it's probably not as big of a deal as if everyone has 200xp with a couple free destiny points from the end of stories and are running around with X fighting III and valyrian fullplate and power 60 houses.

I'm actually starting a Game of Thrones variant game as a PbP (players are in house/character creation steps right now).

I haven't actually thought about the experience values for replacement PCs. I expect I'll allow experience to float over, but not glory or bonus destiny points or other in game awards. That way there is some recouping of investment, but it is still a blow to the house.

Of course, those losses are mitigated if the dead character had invested his rewards back into his House.
