Parrying and shields

Postby Iron Legs » Sat Mar 24, 2012 8:28 am

In a former subject, we talked there about the possibility to use the Fight skill to parry attacks. I think perhaps the Shield skill could be used for it.
So if a player use the Shield skill that way, he throws the dices using a Minor Action, and can still Attack with the other Minor Action.

That will avoid perhaps that players with Fight 5 Sword 3 or such could kill characters with a single blow. Even when heavily armored. Of course it can make the PCs almost invulnerable... I still have to think it.

I still perhaps an advanced rule could be made to reflect that shields, sooner or later, ends destroyed.

I think that maybe the reason for cautious attack -1D to attack and +3 to defenses.
You are making a safer attack and being in place to parry or block the next attack.

If you wanted to allow a character's Fighting skill to have an influence on their defence when parrying etc., you could always houserule that when fighting defensively the bonus is equal to the character's Fighting skill (after any adjustment for training requirements etc.) rather than just +3. If they are fighting with a defensive weapon they would get an additional +1 to their defence.

My main problem is that characters with Fighting 6 become too much lethal. And that the shield skill is useless, beyond the captain America fighting style.

I think I will try Pytorb ideas, thanks.

I prefer Parry to be an Agility test with bonus dice in whatever weapon is being used. Essentially, it's just like Dodge but makes use of weapons to avoid being hit. Shields are extra handy in that they get the added Defensive bonus. It works really well.
