Npc spotlight competition

Postby Andferne » Fri Dec 02, 2011 1:49 pm

This is just a random idea for something for the community here who enjoy Dragon Age and coming up with statistics. I've seen it done on other boards and some have a lot of fun with it. It could be set up on a monthly basis with one 'Master' thread tied to each of the monthly ones as this progresses.

The game would be as follow. I apologize ahead of time if this is a bit confusing. If so please let me know and I will try and explain it more.

At the start of each month, the first week would be set up for voting. People would vote on what important NPC they would like to see written up. At the end of the week the votes would be tallied and whichever character got the most votes would be this months competition. From there anyone and everyone would be free to create 'their' version of the NPC at any point in their career. The competition would stay open until the last week of the month. Them entries would be closed and another voting poll would be held. Everyone would then vote on which NPC write up they liked the best and thought hit the character spot on. From here whichever one was voted on the most would be placed in the 'Npc Spotlight' thread.

Thoughts? Would anyone be interested in something like this?

I like the idea but I'm a tad confused.

So there's already an idea for an NPC and people stat him up? Like "Warrior Bann of X" or "Leader of Circle Tower X"?

I'd prefer to see something more like a theme or idea. No brief or history about the character, just a single like or description like "Thief Guild Head" or "Beloved Bandit Hero", or move towards the monster/enemy side of it as well with "Skulking Beast of Briaridge" or "Rayth, the Half-Living Mage"

I like the idea though

Well I originally had intended this to be canon Npcs, such as Varric, Zevran, etc. But I like the 'Our original Npc' builds better. Throughout my campaigns I've already made up stuff for characters like a Tevinter Magistrate, an Arishock, Dread pirate lord, Antivan assassin simply known as the Archer, and a abomination Sarebas.

See they're all far more interesting to me. I think there's been a couple of threads on here that have statted up NPC's from the game and it wouldn't particularly interest me.

Saying that, statting up Old Man Varric or Isabella before she became a pirate would be fun. So maybe a bit of mix and match

I would definitely be more interested in stated up NPCs of random types instead of majors from the video games. I do not consider the characters to be canon for my version of DA so I would have no use for Fenris' stats or Alistairs. On the other hand potential enemies or allies who are very generic in terms of RP build would be awesomely useful.

Generic Npc's seem to be the best choice. Hopefully others will chime in as well with interest. If so then towards the end of this month we'll start voting on a theme. So starting this new year we can get this under way.

The problem with canon NPCs is that they're relatively cut-and-dry. There wouldn't be too much differntiation between them, and I think that (eventually) GR will release them according to their system. I like the idea of "generic" NPCs; they can be difficult to create as memorable NPCs sometimes, so a bank of useable NPCs could be handy to have around.

We shall need to be sure to specify a relative level range as well for each concept. After all, "Bandit Lord who has a thing for Bunnies" can be so weak they are dispatched by a level 1 group with little effort or so powerful, a level 10 group of PCs struggles to overcome their bunny army. Alternatively, we could do categories (best "set 1" version, best "set 2" version and best "set 3" version). Andferne, since this is your thread I'll pass that decision over to you.

A level range would be a good idea to keep in mind, and once this starts I'll make sure to comment about it.

A level range would be appropriate, yes. I also think, that whoever 'starts' this contest, should provide a short bio and character description of the NPC in question, so there's something to orientate.

Instead of a Level Range, I'd suggest using static levels of 3 and 8. As their the mid level of each set (I'd stay away from doing any Set 3 NPCs, until Set 3 is actually released). Anyone wishing to use the characters then has a reference point to level them up or down, according to their needs.

The NPCs could be required to have both a level 3 and 8 entry, or not. Depending on what people prefer.

I was thinking levels 5 and 10 to be the 'set' benchmark for the builds. To me level three does not give you much wiggle room to make a unique and interesting character. Your back story, or fluff if you will. Would be the determining factor at that level.
