Freedom Force: The Video Game

Postby Daywalker » Sat Jul 26, 2003 2:35 pm

How many people on the board have played this game and what are their thoughts on it? I enjoyed it but didn't get as far into it as I would have liked. The main reason for this was because of the Golden Age comic feel of the game. The next game in this proposed trilogy is suppose to be like the comic era of the 70's, which is definetely something I would get more into.

I have it, but haven't gotten very far. Mostly because my computer has no sound. That really bites when trying to play games like FF.

I finished it...and loved it.

I found that I constantly picked the same characters all the time, for most missions.

Am I the only one?

I played it and liked it, didn't complete it though as it was a friends copy that I was borrowing.

I like the character creation element too it, but did not like that I had to play with the given characters as opposed to just having my own custom characters from start to finish.

Only other gripe with it, which although not a dig at the game itself but the type of game is that I hate Linear game.

I like Open ended non linear games, not linear fixed number of missions games.

Makes me wish that Microprose had released Guardians: Agents of Justice before they'd gone belly up that would have been a dream come true for me. A game where I make my own heroes, I can improve them through experience, I could build and upgrade the HQ, do research, make things... and although there was a central story to it, it could technically be played forever! Much in the vein of thier X-Com UFO (or UFO Defence as it was released in the US).

Sigh... if only it had been released :(

i liked it a lot.

While i tried to vary the character, several we just simply good choices.

the second time thru, i varied more but still felt the lack.

the third time i built a custom character and it proved very successful.
The points don't make balance right, balance in play proves the points right.

Basically its your typical comic book story of super powered communists and superhroes duking it out. The characters are all very varied and interesting with my personal favorite being the Alchemiss. Just picture a well written comic from the 40s era and you have the general game.

I absolutly loved it. Got finished the game, then downloaded the Custom Force Mod. Now I just tinker around with home built PCs and skins. It's sort of a blast having Batman/Robin going through the levels, or some of the X-Men. Sure, it's the same thing over and over, but I try to do different things. I made the Hulk on the Mr. Mechanical level. To get to Mechanical I went through the buildings to do so. I also get a kick out of seeing how far you can knock citizens through the air. Thats the beauty of the game I think. Even once you've beaten it because things are so interactive you can do more things.

Once I downloaded the Fantastic Four mod, they did some GREAT things. Voices, new levels, skins, talking faces. One of the best video games out there and now I hear it runs about $10.

I haven't figured out how to make my own skins yet, but if you're interested I can toss you up some good links. Even if you're not into video games, seriously, give it a shot. It'll be worth the time it takes to say, "Yeah, I hate video games'

On my old machine it was a system hog and it definetely needed a lot of patching but it picked up as the story went. Perhaps in the second one they will fix those problems.

I haven't had any systems problems with it.

I have completed the game about 6 times each with differant 'heros' in differant scenarios.

Can't wait for the next version.

Has anyone heard of any progress on #2? It's been, well, forever since I have heard anything. Now that the game is $12 you think the company is either working on something big, or belly up.

I think the game is brilliant! It's campy, sure, but so was a lot of the old Kirby stuff this game was so inspired by. (Just look at those jawlines and stances - Ha!) It's a great game that I've only recently had the chance to get into (I'm about a 1/4 of the way through on a Mac.). It takes the Baldur's Gate concept of CRPG's and converts it to the superheroe genre. The music is pretty darn good too, and varied/tailored to the characters. I dare say if you like M&M you'd like Freedom Force. Also, there's a free for all section f the game where you can just go through waves of combat, semi-arcade style, with either the house heroes or your own for those times you just want to open up a can of whoop-ass for a little while.
Over at the Yahoo MnM Board someone supposedly did a Freedom Force conversion for M&M...I'd love to see it.
And thanks for the scoop on the supposed trilogy - That's terrific news!

Actually, a well-written comic from the 60s is more accurate. The game has a decidedly Silver Age feel, and takes place during the Cold War, not the Second World War.

Anyway, I absolutely loved it myself.

I only played through it once, but that's just how I do things. There is always something new to catch my eye.

The fact that I finished it shows that I loved it. I only finish about a thrid of the games I start.

Its a bit of a fire cracker. It doesn't aim to high, but it does everything it aims to do. I couldn't really ask for more.

You are correct Eletarmion, I haven't played in so long that I forgot that. However, according to the producer of the game it is really more of a story set in the 50s because the chronology of the game series is 50s, 70s and 90s for each respective game in terms of the subject matter they will cover.

That's odd as it definately has more of a sixties feel to me especially with all the heavy Lee, Kirby, Ditko homages/inspirations.

I felt it was a mix between between Golden Age and Silver Age genre of heroes as far as the story and dialog went.

Personally I enjoy this game and still do to this day. Once you get the handle on installing meshes and skins, it is a lot of fun trying out different heroes. Which is probably why Marvel shut down one of the fans sites since they felt people could have more fun with FF than anything they might put out.

My only gripe with the game is that I am limited to 4 heroes at a time. :(

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by frost.

I still screw up skins and I have never figured out how to do meshes. I so want to make a Captian America and Batman FF characters. Any tips for those of us that are less technically inclined? Where do you get Meshes now? Lot of the links I tried for the ones with the shield are 404ed.
