One of the things I liked in GOO D20 combat system was that unlike most RPGs where combat works something like this..

I roll D20 you Defense is a 15 anything over 15 I hit you...

The GOO system worked more like this....

My attack is +5

My Defense is +3

They both roll -

Attacker rolls a 11 +5

Defender rolls a 14 +3

Defender did not get hit. I like this because...well lets face it no one stands there and lets you hit them. The roll represented the Defender trying to dodge that attack.

can someone break down a combat round so that I might see how it works in this game.

Combat in SoIaF:

My Attack ist 12

Defense value of opponent ist 7

I hit with double succes (damage x 2)

damage - armor rating = damage done to the opponent

EDIT: Bevor you ask for each chapter and each rule in the new system you could take a look into the quick start rules, where things like this questions are explained in a fast and clear way.
Hope for the best, prepare for the worst

The defender has a difficulty to be hit.
If the attacker rolls higher than their difficulty to be hit, the attacker does damage.
The more the attacker hits by, the more damage they do.
The defender can take an action in their turn to make them more difficult to be hit.
