Questions on Experience and Destiny

Postby warden » Mon Feb 23, 2009 11:08 am

Hi,

first off I just wanted to say that I am really looking forward to this game. I have the GoO version, and while I thought the presentation was top notch, D20 just wasn't my cup of tea.

Two things that I was curious about were Experience and Destiny, and I was hoping that the designer could answer a few basic questions that I had since I don't remember anything being mentioned in the Designer Journals.

First, are skill advancement and experience tied together, or do they use different systems? If they aren't tied together, do you earn experience or is it a advancement through using the skill system (ala Runequest).

Second, How does Destiny permanently increase during play. Is it something that happens frequently, or only rarely?

Third, Gaining qualities through Destiny. What are the costs like? I.E. can you get a quality by burning a point of Destiny, or does it cost many?

Sorry for my impatience, but I am curious as to how the basics of these mechanics work. Thanks so much!

They are connected. In a nutshell, characters earn Experience and spend it on improving their abilities and specialties, or gaining additional Destiny.

On average, players will be able to afford improving a specialty after a story, might improve an ability every three or four, or gain Destiny every five or six stories.

A new quality costs 1 point of Destiny, although some qualities have prerequisites, which effectively increase their cost.
