Ahhh!
The confusion revealed: there are two instances where the rules refer to a character being "Maimed".
The drawback is "As the drawback Marked, plus some other penalties".
The consequence of defeat is just a -1 to any one ability. It's not specifically linked to any drawback (and so technically can't be bought off with a Destiny, but the ability can be improced as normal via experience)
Despite the same name, the two are not interchangeable.
