[Mythic Vistas] Eternal Rome opinions?

Postby havard » Sat May 14, 2011 4:09 am

Alright, I now have Testament, Trojan War, and Hamunaptra from the Mythic Vistas line. I am pretty happy about these books and I am thinking about getting Eternal Rome next. What do people think about it?

Like the others, it too suffers from being shoehorned into the 3E rules set. A True 20 treatment would have been much better in my opinion. Having said that, Testament is my favourite 3E-era book (closely followed by Nyambe).

Awesome Spike Y Jones :)

I noticed that Testament seemed to be mainly historically oriented, Hamunaptra makes more extensive use of fantasy elements such as elves, dwarves, Gnolls etc.

Both are cool takes, but where does Eternal Rome fall in this respect?

Eternal Rome is mostly historical, but then adds elements of magic, such as the Evil Eye being something that has actual magical effects instead of just being superstitition, and fantasy creatures from Greek and Roman myth actually being found out in the wilderness -- but not in downtown Rome itself.

The setting can be played with low, medium, or high magic levels, but the assumption is that magic use has either been so low or so balanced up to now that it hasn't changed Roman history: while a legion might have a magic eagle atop its standard that grants minor bonuses in battle, that didn't save Varus and his legions in the Teutoberg Forest.
